Governments, Organizations, and Companies Phase

A Governments, Organizations and Companies Phase will follow Sunrise, wherein government institutions, companies, and organizations established in Belgium may submit an application for ‘organizationname.vlaanderen’ or ‘organizationname.brussels,’ namely:

  1. Government institutions established in Belgium
  • institutions and bodies belonging to national, regional, provincial, and local government bodies
  • public authorities, organizations or bodies
  • European, international, and intergovernmental organizations.
  1. Companies or businesses with their (head) office in Belgium

These are companies and businesses that have a head office or ordinary domicile in Belgium (no postbox addresses). Companies can be a public limited company, or a one-man band, and self-employed businesses also fall within this category.

  1. Organizations established in Belgium

These are organizations that are domiciled in Belgium (no postbox addresses) and in the first instance, non-profit associations, foundations, and international non-profit associations, with one requirement being that the organization must be a legal entity.

During this phase, you can apply for the following domains:

  • your official name or designation, the acronym of that name, your trademark or brand name, the name of a geographical area, and name of origin or provenance if you are a government institution;

Multiple applications for the same domain will result in an auction.

It will be necessary to validate your personal details via the DNS Belgium ‘eID wizard’ at its website (where the data on your eID card is scanned using a card reader) and what is on your eID card defines the list of domains from which you can choose. After selecting the name(s) you want, you will receive confirmation of your reservation and a registration code for each domain reserved, which is required by your registrar in order to register the domains. (Such registration codes are only valid for seven days, otherwise the reserved domains will be released again.)

Landrush Phase

Under the Landrush Phase, anyone can apply for domains without restrictions, either in terms of applicant, location, or place of residence, with multiple applications for the same domain resulting in an auction.

General Availability

Domains will be available to all without restriction under General Availability on a first-come, first-served basis. New gTLDs Currently Running

Registry operator Dot Scot Registry Limited’s new GeoTLD, .SCOT, has been featured in the news this week, with articles at domainnews.com and bbc.co.uk. A Pioneer Program for the TLD, which entered into Sunrise on 15 July, has also gone live for the purpose of promoting the .SCOT TLD, wherein it will allow registration of a maximum of 90 domains to be selected by the registry from among eligible expressions of interests received, based on a criteria of visibility, notoriety, and commitment to the promotion of the .SCOT TLD.

Among those who have signed up so far are the Scottish government, the main “yes” and “no” campaign groups for the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence, “Yes Scotland” and “Better Together,” as well as WWF Scotland, NHS Scotland, and Scouts Scotland. International pioneers include the Louisiana Scots and the Clan Wallace. This comes ahead of the referendum and of course the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow from 23 July.

The Pioneer Program is set to run until 15 September 2014, with domains available to all from 23 September 2014.

Meanwhile, the registry has announced that if you know someone who had a baby in Scotland on 15 July, they will secure their .SCOT domain for them for free (they will ask for some proof!).
