In a recent statement, ICANN made clear its intent to advance the first four domains applied for through the new gTLD program to delegation. What does this mean? It means that in the very near future we may have the start of the first new gTLD official Sunrise period, and more new domains being applied for under extensions like .CAMERA and . сайт (Russian for website).
The four domains that ICANN has cleared for delegation are all internationalized domain names or IDNs:
شبكة – Arabic for Web or Network
онлайн – Russian for Online
сайт – Russian for Website
游戏 – Chinese for Game
Further information on the launch plans for these domains is expected in the following weeks. One large gTLD applicant, Donuts Inc., has also announced tentative plans to launch nine of its new gTLDs in the near future. The new gTLDs are: .CAMERA, .CLOTHING, .VENTURES, .LIGHTING, .SINGLES, .VOYAGE, .GURU, .HOLDINGS, and .EQUIPMENT. All new gTLD registries must provide either a 30-day pre-Sunrise notification period and a 30-day Sunrise period, or a 60-day Sunrise period with no notification period.
If you’re a brand owner, you must begin the process of assessing each new gTLD that goes live to decide whether or not there may be a business need to register a domain in that particular extension. If you have already filed trademarks in the Trademark Clearinghouse, you must also decide whether or not to participate in the new gTLDs Sunrise period.
If you have not yet filed your mark(s) in the Trademark Clearinghouse, there is still time to complete a submission before the first Sunrise period begins. Corsearch can assist you with the Trademark Clearinghouse submission process. Please contact your local Corsearch Account Manager, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to get started.
