New Trademark Filings Hint at New Name for NBA’s New Orleans Hornets

by T+B Blog Team on December 20, 2012

U.S. National Basketball Association team the New Orleans Hornets may be getting ready to choose its new name, according to the website Behind the Buck Pass.

Recent trademark registrations filed by the New Orleans Hornets NBA Limited Partnership for the names below hint at what the new team name may be:

  • New Orleans Pelicans
  • New Orleans Rougarou
  • New Orleans Mosquitos
  • New Orleans Swamp Dogs
  • New Orleans Bullsharks

Here’s the New Orleans Pelicans record from the Corsearch platform:

Pelicans

Most of these names have a close association with the team’s home state of Louisiana. The brown pelican is Louisiana’s official state bird. A rougarou, according to Cajun legend, is a werewolf-like creature that prowls the state’s swamps. In Cajun dialect, a “swamp dog” is actually an alligator. The bullshark is the most common shark found in the northern Gulf of Louisiana. And mosquitos? Well, 68 different species can be found across the state.

So how is a new name chosen and when will we know a decision’s been made? In a statement to Fox Sports, a team spokesman said: “The eventual decision will be made by the NBA.” And Yahoo! Sports reported that the team might change its name as early as the 2013-14 season.

Which new team name do you prefer and why?
