China’s IDN ccTLD Launch Begins
The launch of China’s .中国 ccTLD, the IDN equivalent of .CN, has been split into two separate phases. Phase 1, which is scheduled to run until October 15, is open to owners of valid registered trademarks both inside and outside mainland China.
In order to qualify for phase 1 of the launch, the domain you apply for must exactly match your registered trademark and the domain name registrant must match the current owner listed on the trademark registration. Only ASCII domains can be registered at this time (e.g., domain.中国).
For those who have trademark registrations in Chinese characters, you may apply for the domain based on the pinyin (sounding out) of the characters. For example, if you own a trademark for 花 朵 123, you may apply for “huaduo123.中国” and “123huaduo.中国”.
Phase 2 of the launch is set to begin on October 15 and run through October 22. During this time, holders of registered second and third level .CN domains (e.g., domain.cn or domain.com.cn) may apply for the corresponding ASCII domain under .中国. The owner information on the IDN ccTLD application must match the owner on the already registered .CN domain.
The results of the Sunrise will be released between October 25–28. In the event of multiple applications for the same domain during the Sunrise, the name will be allocated to the first application that the registry received.
