Trademarks and Airport Names: Vaclav Havel Prague International Airport Trademark Filed

by T+B Blog Team on January 9, 2012

Letiště Praha, a. s., the company that runs Prague’s international airport has registered Vaclav Havel Prague International Airport as a trademark in the Czech Republic. The trademark registration uses the English spelling of the former Czech president’s name, rather than the correct Czech spelling of “Václav.” Here’s the record from our own Corsearch® Advantage™:

Public efforts to rename the airport after Havel, who died last December, included a petition that now has more than 60,000 signatures, including Havel’s widow and his brother. Another petition opposing the renaming of the airport has also been circulated. One interesting note: Havel’s former office secretary, Vladimír Hanzel, told reporters that Havel didn’t particularly like to fly.

The renaming of Prague’s airport follows a trend among many of the world’s airports that have been named after politicians, including Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Some airports have even been named after film stars (particularly in California in the U.S.), like John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana and Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. Historical figures pop up in airport names too — there’s Skopje Alexander the Great Airport in Macedonia and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport in Italy.

Not to be left out are athletes — soccer is represented by George Best Belfast City Airport in Northern Ireland and golf great Arnold Palmer’s birthplace of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, boasts the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. Musicians and composers are represented with W. A. Mozart Airport in Salzburg, Austria, Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the UK, and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana.

Our favorite airport name happens to honor the name of a folk legend — Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield in the UK.

What’s your favorite airport name?
