Who would have guessed that celebrating a “frozen dead guy” would become such a successful annual event? Apparently the crowds that gather every March in the small town of Nederland, CO have gotten too big for the Nederland Chamber of Commerce to handle. They’re looking for someone else to manage the event, so they’ve put the trademark for Frozen Dead Guy Days up for sale. Price: Unknown.
If you’re anything like us, this story raises a lot of questions, like: Is there really “a guy”? Who is he? How’d he die? And who will buy the trademark?
According to news reports: The “guy” is 89-year-old Bredo Morstoel, a Norwegian, who died in 1989. His family “brought” his body to Nederland and according to the New York Times, planned to open a cryogenics business. Some local newspapers reported that Morstoel’s family simply froze him, hoping that technology would eventually evolve to reanimate him. Whatever the reason, Morstoel’s been packed in dry ice and stored in a shed outside Nederland since 1993.
Visiting that shed is just one of the many events held during the 3-day winter festival. There are also coffin races, a parade of hearses, frozen salmon tossing and a frozen T-shirt contest.
