Want to Hear a Registered Trademark Sound?

by T+B Blog Team on October 11, 2010

We’ve written about registered trademarks for colors on Trademarks + Brands, but have you given any thought to registered trademarks for sounds? A post on IP Watchdog gives the details behind a recent registration obtained by Carl Oppedahl for a 16-second jazz “song.” We were happy to see mention of the USPTO Trademark Soundex where you can hear clips of sounds that are registered trademarks, like these:

*Homer Simpson’s “D’OH”

*The clanging bell at the New York Stock Exchange

*The Tarzan yell from the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. toy action figures

And if you visit The Texas Lice Squad website, in the background you’ll hear its registered trademark sound—a jingle sung to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Make sure your speakers are on. And check out the length of the description of the sound in the Federal record on Corsearch® Advantage™:

What’s your favorite sound with a registered trademark?
