INTA: An Elvis Sighting?

by Sally Velthaus on May 26, 2010

We didn’t spot any blue suede shoes, but some folks in the “Elvis Lives!” session on at INTA got their Elvis on, sporting sunglasses and sideburns.

There was some (excuse the expression) “singing” in the room, along with a few “thank you, thank you very much” catchphrases tossed around.

The real topic? “Elvis Lives! A Practical Guide to Clearance, Prosecution and Enforcement within the Community Trade Mark System.” The session presented attendees with an unusual scenario: Elvis is still alive, he’s ready to perform, but only if he can register his CTMs. A panel of outside counsel, an OHIM representative and an in-house expert gave advice on the CTM system, using both traditional and non-traditional marks.

Keeping Elvis alive, the session included a segment called, “Don’t Be Cruel,” describing how trademark owners should deal with oppositions and enforcement.

Tell us about your experiences with CTMs or share your favorite Elvis hit.
